watches, but really about a cluster, maybe six, eight states will make or break this race. romney made up a lot of ground since last week's debate for sure. >> i don't know if this one will move the needle. both appealed to their base really. joe biden didn't make any fatal flaws. and neither did paul ryan in this one. but, you know let everybody spin it how they want. i looked at six different polls. three gave it to biden. three gave it to paul ryan. >> it's a draw essentially. >> pretty much is a draw. >> again, i know the media's inclination, folk's inclination to pay attention to stylistic issues rather than substantive one -- the water drinking, laughing, grinning, we saw more of joe biden's teeth than his dentist last night. looking at the issues iran taxes, abortion medicare the role of faith, how they govern there are some sharp differences between the two men. i hope people paid attention to that other than the theatrics of the night. >> martha raddatz, our colleague here at abc, i think she did a fantastic job. really just keeping everybody in check. >> martha

numbers. this is the new poll from pew and it indicates romney with a four-point advantage, within the sampling error but look at the september numbers, an eight poi eight-point advantage for the president. let's go to gallup. this is of registered voters conducted both before and after the debate and you can see the president with a five-point advantage. so it is interesting, two different polls, two different stories here. we're going sto see a couple moe national polls to get a sense of how much of a bounce romney got from the debate. i always say this, the battle for the white house is a battle for states and the electoral votes. go to this out of michigan, michigan a state where mitt romney was born. look at these numbers if we have them. look at the president's advantage in michigan. it was ten points back in september. that was the lead. now it's just down to three, which is within the sampling error. we have a lot of pls coming out to analyze. >> that looks like a lot more people came into it than dropped out of it or changed. there's only a wee difference between obama's s

race. both candidates campaigned hard the state yesterday, and mitt romney has more appearances there today. abc's karen travers is joining us this morning with more on this very close race. good morning, karen. >> reporter: good morning, rob. good morning, sunny. good luck trying to make sense of any polls over the last couple days. one thing is clear. this hayes has gotten tighter. mitt romney was back in iowa for the first time in nearly a month. >> iowa is going to help elect me the next president of the united tate >> flying over his event, this sign mocking him for the comments about big bird at last week's debate. the obama campaign is also trying to keep that in the news with this new ad. >> mitt romney taking on our >> mt.t romney taking on our >> republicans say the president's campaign is showing signs of de >> these are tough times with real serious issues, so you have to scratch your head when the president spends the last week talking about saving big bird. >> election day, weeks away, getting a solid read on where the race stands is not easy. a new center taken af

are accusing romney of flip-flopping, flip-flopping on all kinds of items since debate number one. we have some sound. let me play this. this is bill clinton. president obama, both talking about that. first, bill clinton. >> i thought, wow, here's old moderate mitt. where you been, boy? i miss eed you all these last f years. >> governor romney put forward a whole bunch of stuff that either involved him running away from position he had taken or doubling down on thing like medicare vouchers that are going to hurt him long term. >> so, jim, does the nuance here on abortion by romney, does it play into what the president and others are saying, that romney is reinventing himself here, you know, 27 days before the election? >> well, the romney campaign would argue, no, but you are right that the obama campaign is starting to seize on this, the obama campaign had a conference call earlier this morning and they latched on to something mitt romney said at the cpac conference in february of this year whenitt romney said he was a severely conservative governor. stephanie cutter said on the conference cal

said what if bashar al assad doesn't go away, but they both agree no boots on the ground in syria. >> looking back and not looking forward. paul ryan is talking about what potentially a romney/ryan ticket would have done differently if they had been in charge, identify rebel groups, identify freedom fighters, perhaps help those that the united states might want to push forward as far as the future leadership of syria is concerned a little bit earlier than the obama administration has. but as far as plans for what happens from this point on, no. and there is no appetite from the united states or quite frankly any country in the western world for boots on the ground in syria. as we heard from the vice president, joe biden, this is not libya. it is a much more complicated scenario. >> i want to get to the libya comparison in a minute. ryan claimed that the administration referred to assad as a reformer. a reformer. to your best -- >> no, this has been -- it has not. this has been fact checked by several sources including cnn. the word reformer was used by hillary clinton in march of
